I’ve lived in Nice for five years now. I think it’s the best riding anywhere in the world. We have incredible mountains – every different type of climb. I could go out and find a different 20 minute-plus climb every day for probably five years.

You can plan epic routes each day. And Nice is a cool city: pretty vibrant, pretty international, diverse, there’s a lot of stuff going on here. You can find everything you want.

Rouleur Roadbook: a road cyclist’s guide to Nice

I am always pretty dead from training, so I’m pretty boring, but I love to go to the beach, even if it’s just for 30 minutes. I feel like I sleep better after a swim in the sea. And there’s an awesome food scene here, a lot of cool restaurants – and I’m really into food. That’s pretty much it, apart from sitting on the couch, watching cycling.

Two years ago, I was on the beach with my girlfriend at the time, and this guy comes up with a speargun and asks us to look after his stuff while he goes in the sea. We’re like, ‘sure, whatever.’ The guy goes in, comes out ten minutes later with this beautiful fish, guts it right there on the beach, puts it in a bag and leaves.

I went to the dive shop round the corner later that day, bought a speargun and went fishing, but I didn’t catch anything. All the fish were really small. It was one of those impulse purchases. I’ve only used it twice… So apart from this shark, I’ve not caught any fish with it.
