For myriad reasons, simple and complex. You do not need us to list them here. The cancellation of the sport’s showcase event will be a brutal blow and effectively – if not actually, though that seems likely too – bring the 2020 season to a close. There may be good reasons why it hasn’t been announced already – some have suggested a ruling from the state may be required to trigger any force majeure clause in contracts – but the longer we wait, the longer this unnecessary artifice of a debate is allowed to continue. It needs to end. There are more important things than cycling.
