Giro d'Italia 2026 stage 21 results: Jonathan Milan saves Lidl-Trek's race with victory in Rome

Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) won a nail-biting final stage of the 2026 Giro d'Italia, on the circuit in Rome. It was the first stage win for Lidl-Trek in what had been a frustrating Grand Tour until today. Finishing safely in the bunch behind Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) is confirmed as the overall winner, taking the maglia rosa on his debut at the race.

"I'm super happy to end the Giro in this way," Milan said at the finish. "I'm really proud for what we achieved in this Giro. We could say we could have done better some stages, but the important is that we always gave our best."

Milan was well-positioned in the final kilometre sitting behind the lead-out of the Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) who was unable to add to his hat-trick of stages, fading to finishing outside the top 10, but the Frenchman was confirmed as the winner of the maglia ciclamino.

The Italian powerhouse, Milan, finished ahead of Giovanni Lonardi (Team Polti VisitMalta) and Paul Penhoët (Groupama-FDJ United) - their best results of this Giro. 

A dangerous move was clawed back in the final few kilometres of the Roman circuit which included Filippo Ganna (Netcompany), Jasper Stuyven (Soudal Quick-Step) and Matteo Sobrero (Lidl-Trek). With Sobrero in that move, it meant that Lidl-Trek didn't have to take charge of the chase.

"Sobrero had to cover some breaks and to help us to position, and the moment that Ganna attacked, he followed," explained Milan. "It was perfect to have him there, so we didn't have to pull behind."

The win saves the Lidl-Trek's Giro, and signals an upturn in results in the past few days which included Giulio Ciccone's KOM jersey win at the men's Giro and Elisa Balsamo's two stage wins at the Giro d'Italia Women. 

"It's beautiful," said Milan. "After three weeks that we are looking for this, winning the last stage in Rome means that we were keeping the head there. We never give up. We always kept fighting for the victory. We always believed in it. We always believed in each other. Thanks to all the team."

Behind there was no change in the general classification with Vingegaard finishing safely in the Italian capital. 

With the Giro victory complete, Vingegaard is the eighth men to have won all three Grand Tours – an achievement that will only deepen the intrigue when he lines up against Tadej Pogačar and Paul Seixas at the Tour de France in July. Those who know him best say he has arrived at this Corsa Rosa in the finest condition of his career. The Tour de France awaits.
