The EF Education First-EasyPost survives a number of attacks to win breakaway stage

Michael Valgren (EF Education First-EasyPost) survived multiple attacks in the finale of stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia, launching his own move in the last kilometre to claim the biggest win of his career.

The Dane had been in the day's break, covering multiple moves – he was even was up the road with Einer Rubio (Movistar) after getting a gap with 14km to go. The duo were caught by Igor Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) with 2.3km to go, and were joined by the other chasers Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), Aleksandr Vlasov (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Andreas Leknessund (Uno X Mobility) with 1.7km to go. 

Valgren held onto another attack from Caruso before making his own move under the flamme rouge, which no one could follow. Leknessund crossed the line in second, ahead of Caruso. 

Earlier in the stage, Jhonatan Narváez (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) intermediate sprint at Roncone to claim 12 points in the points classification to move back into maglia ciclamino.
