Selle Italia Opal White capsule collection hero

Selle Italia's Opal White capsule collection allows its SLR range to be seen in a new light

A new opalescent cover paired with iridescent logos 'blends advanced engineering with a refined, luminous aesthetic' for the four saddles in the range – and there's matching opalescent bar tape to complete the look

In ancient Rome, opals were highly prized precious jewelstones, second only to emeralds. Pliny the Elder, in his Naturalis Historia, written in the first century AD, described them thus: “Combining, as they do, the brilliant qualities of the most valuable gems, they above all others defy description. They display the more subtle fires of the carbunculus, the flashing purple of the amethyst and the sea-green tint of the smaragdus [emerald] all combined together in incredible brilliance.”

The Latin opalus directly translates as ‘precious stone’, and Roman senators wore them set into signet rings as symbols of good fortune, hope and purity. In contrast with marble or bronze, materials which represented permanence for the Romans, the opal’s mysteriously shifting colours reflected movement, perhaps for them the transience of life itself. In a story referenced by Pliny, the senator Nonius was exiled by Mark Antony for refusing to sell him his extremely valuable, hazelnut-sized opal – which he allegedly desired as a gift for Cleopatra.

Over 2,000 years and many legends later, the opal has inspired a reinterpretation of one of Selle Italia’s own highly prized models, the SLR. One of the defining saddles of the modern era, the SLR is ridden by WorldTour professionals and performance-oriented amateurs alike, and especially for all its aficionados, the Italian company has created the Opal White capsule. The four SLR models and bar tape that make up the collection are given a unique treatment that at first glance looks pure white but which, like the precious stone, at a closer look captures the light, transforming it into iridescent reflections.

The SLR 3D Carbon Opal White leads the capsule collection. Its 3D-printed surface is formed of a lattice structure that subtly alters how light interacts with the saddle, evoking a sense of visual depth. Carbon rails keep weight to a claimed 137 grams in S3 sizing, maintaining race-ready performance while allowing the aesthetics to take centre stage. The iridescent detailing in the logos is designed to match, visible only when viewed closely or in direct light.

Alongside it, the SLR Carbon Opal White embodies classic saddle minimalism in both weight and construction. With its hand-covered padding and carbon rails, it weighs just 118 grams in the S3 size – the same as it does in its standard black finish. The opalescent colour effect remains subtle, revealing tonal changes only as the bike moves through changing light conditions.

The SLR Elite Opal White combines reliability with an ultra-elegant look. Tubular steel rails and integrated shock absorbers introduce additional vibration damping, reflecting the growing recognition that comfort and efficiency are closely linked. The opal-inspired visual language is consistent, a reminder that exclusive design can exist across price points rather than solely at the high end.

Completing the saddle quartet, the SLR Advan Opal White is the most accessible of the capsule collection. Built for versatility, it features the same SLR sitting shape and the same opalescent finish while prioritising everyday usability.

The Opal White bar tape brings the collection together, matching saddle with bar tape in timeless pro style. Finished with the same iridescent sheen as the saddles, it unites the capsule as a coherent aesthetic statement. As with the SLR saddles, performance is uncompromised – as with the non-Opal version, the tape is designed for superior grip and control in all weather conditions.

Founded in 1897 in Asolo, Veneto, Selle Italia has spent almost 130 years refining the interface between rider and machine. It has been at the forefront of innovation in materials, ergonomics and construction, and the Opal White capsule showcases the latest iteration of its most iconic model – it's a reminder that classical beauty and state-of-the-art equipment can still coexist.
