Peace Race Poster - 1973 Lech Majewski

“The 1973 Peace Race was won by the 'Eddy Merckx of the East', the Pole Ryszard Szurkowski.
The race was a catastrophe for the GDR, their best placed finisher 15th. Cycling had been the most popular of all sports there, but now the focus had shifted towards Olympic gold. Swimmers, gymnasts and track and field athletes could be 'farmed' and the Olympics represented the perfect ideological shop window.
Like much of Lech Majewski's early work, the poster is characterized by minimalism, and his extraordinary gift for geometry. In utilizing silhouette he perfectly captures the dynamism of the subject matter.”
Herbie Sykes, “Wyscig Pokoju”, Rouleur 30
