“Krzysztoforski's 1971 poster depicts the four leader's jerseys. The blue of the team competition is indicative of the paradoxical nature of the race. The socialist context in which it was set determined that the team competition was much more significant than in the commercial races of the west. Its symbolism was colossal. The thinking went that it could only be won by setting aside personal ambition and working as part of a co-operative. This, cycling as political metaphor, was invariably lost on visiting western teams.”
Herbie Sykes, “Wyscig Pokoju”, Rouleur 30
